Our Program

The Toronto Youth Music Theatre Company (TYMTC) is musical theatre education at its finest. Our goal is to provide an exciting professional experience for the dedicated student. We offer the young performer the opportunity to explore the world of musical theatre through classes and workshops, culminating in a full stage production. It is our belief that the classes and performances will encourage the students to strive for higher levels of proficiency and inspire excellence within themselves.

Our unique nine-month program is designed exclusively for young people who show both promise and commitment. TYMTC will select a focused and passionate group of students who will work on Sunday afternoons with enthusiasm from September until May.

Admission is by audition only.

Course Outline

The nine-month program (excluding long weekends, Christmas, Easter and March breaks) will be divided into training/skill development sessions and production rehearsal sessions. Students will be placed into classes by age during their training sessions. This will ensure smaller class sizes to work on the three disciplines - acting, singing and dance/movement.

Training/Skill Development

Sessions are designed to develop musical theatre skills. Each three-hour Sunday will provide the students with coaching in acting, singing and/or movement, on a rotational basis. Every week the student will work on different aspects of these disciplines. Sample classes are as follows:

Acting: Scene study, stage technique and improvisation.
Singing: Voice technique, part-singing and song interpretation.
Dance: Dance technique, partnering and musical theatre movement.

Potential students and their parents must realize the serious commitment involved in this program. Homework will be assigned (i.e., monologue and/or song preparation), with the understanding that the student will practice on a regular basis. Musical theatre skills will not develop sufficiently without this necessary effort.

TYMTC will endeavor to include the occasional Master Class, encompassing different aspects of the music theatre industry, from well known local casting directors discussing audition techniques, to professional performers specializing in a particular discipline relevant to our spring production.

Parents will be invited to attend an open house in December, which will give them an opportunity to see the student’s work in progress.

Production Rehearsals

Sessions will be focused on rehearsing for a popular, standard ‘Broadway’ musical production that will be mounted toward the beginning of May. Students will spend their rehearsal with various members of our faculty and occasional guest artists, as a full cast or in smaller groups for specific scene work.

Spring Production

Students will be required to attend extra rehearsals in the spring prior to the performance weekend. We will keep the parents updated with the rehearsal schedule. Please be advised as to the importance of keeping the last week of April and the first week of May available for extra rehearsals and performances.
